Turnitin AI detection generates more confusion than any other part of the submission process, and most of it comes from one mistake: treating the AI percentage as if it were the similarity score. They are different numbers, produced by different systems, and they mean different things.
Here is what the tool actually does, drawn from Turnitin's own documentation rather than from thread consensus.
1. Turnitin AI detection is not the similarity report
Similarity has been around for two decades. It compares your text against a database of existing sources and reports overlap. The AI writing indicator launched in April 2023 and does something unrelated: it estimates how much of the document was generated by a language model.
A paper can return 0% similarity and a high AI percentage at the same time, because original text that nothing else matches is exactly what a model produces. If someone tells you their similarity was clean so the AI score cannot be a problem, they have merged two separate systems.
2. You probably cannot see your own score
Turnitin's own documentation is explicit: only instructors and administrators can see the indicator. Students see the similarity report and not the AI percentage, which is why so many people submit with no idea what the number will be.
That asymmetry is the practical reason the third-party detector market exists. It is not that students distrust Turnitin, it is that they cannot see the figure they are being judged on.
Turnitin's student-facing draft tool has historically not surfaced the AI indicator either, so checking a draft through your institution's own system does not tell you what your marker will see. Any pre-submission check you run is therefore a different detector giving a different number, which is worth remembering before treating a clean result elsewhere as reassurance.
3. Turnitin says it should not decide a case
This gets lost. Turnitin's own FAQ states that it "does not make a determination of misconduct; rather, it provides data for the educators to make an informed decision". The vendor is not claiming proof, and that wording is worth knowing if you ever have to sit in the meeting.
Whether every marker reads that guidance is another question, and it is the gap most students actually get caught in. Knowing that the vendor itself does not claim proof is useful in that conversation.
4. Universities have switched it off
Vanderbilt disabled Turnitin's AI detection in 2023, publishing its reasoning: concerns about accuracy, the absence of a clear explanation of how the score was produced, and the seriousness of a false accusation. Other institutions followed, and more kept the feature while quietly instructing staff not to act on the number alone.
So the honest answer to "does my university use it" is that you cannot assume either way. Some do, some disabled it, and some have it enabled with a policy that says it proves nothing.
Worth checking your own institution's academic integrity page rather than relying on what a thread says about a different university. Policies are published, they vary widely, and the wording is what a panel applies.
5. The percentage is not a probability of guilt
A 60% AI score is a claim about how much of the document reads as machine-generated. It is not a statement that there is a 60% chance you cheated. People read it the second way, including some markers, and that misreading is where disciplinary meetings start from the wrong place.
Detectors also perform worse on short passages and on plain, consistent prose, which is why second-language writers are flagged disproportionately. That is a property of the technology rather than a judgement about them.
Turnitin states it targets a false positive rate below 1% at the document level, and it will not score a submission at all unless it carries at least 300 words of prose. Accuracy is weakest on short passages, which is why a flagged paragraph inside an otherwise clean paper deserves the least weight and generates the most threads.
6. What actually protects you
Not a lower score. Your drafts. A version history showing the piece taking shape over hours answers the question a percentage cannot, which is who did the thinking. Google Docs and Word with AutoSave both keep it by default, and it costs nothing to write there.
If the concern is that your own prose reads flat and even, that is a writing problem before it is a detector problem, and it is fixable. Restructuring sentences so they vary in length and shape is what a human rewriter tool does, and it improves the work for a marker as well as for a classifier. What no tool changes is authorship: if the argument came from a model, that is a different question entirely.
